The Quran mentions two types of heavy storms or hurricanes:[i]
A Storm That Can Break Everything
“Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into the sea another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind (Kaasefan) and drown you for what you denied? Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger.?”[ii]
The word “Kaasefan” means a heavy gale of wind, hurricane, fierce storm or raging tempest. This is a wind that can pull down things in its path such as trees, wooden houses and so on.
A Storm That Can Destroy Everything
“Then, when they saw it as a dense cloud coming towards their valleys, they said: “This is a cloud bringing us rain!” Nay, but it is that which you were asking to be hastened: a storm wind wherein is a painful punishment. Which will destroy everything by its Lord’s command. In the morning there was nothing to see except their (ruined) dwellings…”[iii]
This is equivalent to hurricanes of 4th and 5th degree.
