The Creation of Weather
“… the heavens and the Earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them and We have made from water every living thing… And We have made the heaven a roof, safe and well-guarded”[i].
“Who made for you the earth a bed (spread out) and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you…”[ii]
The above verses indicate that Allah (swt) created the Earth and heavens, and then parted the two, so that the wind would blow, the rain would fall, the springs and rivers would flow, the crops and fruits would grow and the animals would be fed. It also points to what Allah (swt) has created in the heavens, such as the shining stars and the planets.
Introduction to Seasons
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day, there are signs for those who possess intellects.”[iii]
Like the alternation of the night and day, the change of seasons is also sign from Allah (swt). Every year, Allah (swt) shows us that it is easy for Him to give death in winter to a valley blossoming with flowers and then to bring it all back to life in spring. This illustrates for us that the world is constantly changing, and that we as human beings also need to constantly make changes and improvements in ourselves. The seasons remind us that Allah (swt) is in control of us and everything around us.
Prophet Mohammad (saw) had said that “Verily, in your lives there are breezes (of grace and mercy) that will blow, indeed you should take advantage of them.” This hadeeth indicates that Allah (swt) will send for us difficult periods and times of ease and that we should prepare ourselves for both seasons just as we prepare ourselves for the summer and winter.
Prophet Mohammad (saw) also said, “In very hot weather delay the Dhuhr prayer till it becomes cooler because the severity of heat is from the raging of the hellfire. The hellfire complained to its Lord saying, “O Lord! My parts are eating each other.” So, Allah allowed it to take two breaths, one in the winter and the other in the summer. The breath in the summer is at the time when you feel the severest heat, and the breath in the winter is at the time when you feel the severest cold”.[iv]
The Earth’s Atmosphere
“(He) who made for you the earth a bed (spread out) and the sky a ceiling…”[v]
“And We made the sky a protective shield and they turn away from its sign.”[vi]
Science has discovered details about Atmosphere and its functions only over the last few centuries. However, the Quran talks about the protective shield more than 1,400 years ago.
Things to Do
In the Introduction to Meteorology section of your Science Journal write down some of the verses related to weather as shown above.
- Answer the following questions:
- Why did Allah separate the Earth and the sky?
- What is the purpose of creating the sky as a roof?
- Why do you think Allah (swt) created seasons.
- Illustrate the Earth and sky after Allah (swt) separated it.
