In the last chapter we learned about Sultan Bayezid and how he expanded Ottoman territories in both Rumelia and Anatolia. However, his advance was stopped as a result of the Battle of Ankara against Tamerlane. The Interregnum (1402–1413) was a period of political instability and civil war in the Ottoman Empire following this defeat. With Bayezid captured, his sons vied for control, leading to a fragmented empire. This power struggle lasted for over a decade until Mehmed I emerged victorious, restoring order and reunifying the empire. As the fifth Ottoman sultan, Mehmed I’s reign (1413–1421) marked a pivotal turning point, as he reestablished central authority, laying the foundation for future Ottoman expansion.
